Corneal endotheliitis is an idiopathic disease, mainly presented as acute, non-suppurative inflammation of corneal endothelia. It has drawn more attention in recent years due to its increasing prevalence, rapid progression and poor prognosis. Researches show that viral infections and subsequent immune responses are involved in the pathogenesis of endotheliitis. Cytomegalovirus, which is highly prevalent in Asian populations, accounts for one of the most severe forms of corneal endotheliitis. The detection of virus by aqueous humor polymerase chain reaction is mandatory in the diagnosis of endotheliitis, because clinical manifestations are diversified. However, without sufficient recognition of the disease or application of viral tests in clinical practices, patients are often misdiagnosed and likely to suffer from blindness.. In this study, we attempt to develop a murine model of cytomegalovirus corneal endotheliitis. Using randomized controlled methods, we monitor the clinical and pathological features at different time point after infection, as well as the virus load and neutralizing antibodies by polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. With these experimental data, we will be able to further investigate the pathogenesis of corneal endotheliitis, and find new solutions for the disease in clinical diagnosis and treatment.
