The suctorid protozoa is a large group of highly particular and differentiated organism, which is periphytic and adept in pollutant absorption. They play very important roles in many fields, e.g. material cycle and energy flow of micro-food-loop, aquaculture disease, environmental biology. However, due to several reasons, this group is seriously poorly-known all through the world and has never been investigated in Chinese and East Asian area. The current research will be focusing on the suctorid group collected from coastal and fresh waters of the east of Zhejiang Province. The tanoxomy, community structure, spatial and temporal distribution, DNA bank construction, and molecular systematics will be studied using morphological, morphogenetic, and molecular analytical modern methods. The main purposes are: (1) to supply the first basic data about these poorly known forms in East China; (2) to fill in the gaps of research of this special group in China and even the whole word; (3) to contribute to the related fields, such as aquaculture disease, ecology and environmental resource science; (4) to form the first archives files of suctorid biodiversity; (5) in addition, this work will make a significant contribution to the improvement of GenBank database.
