The planthopper family Dictyopharidae, one of larger families of 28 Fulgoroidea families currently recognized, is a large, diverse, and cosmopolitan group. Historically, systematics and phylogeny of Dictyopharidae is poorly studied. Most species were described rather briefly and even not illustrated, so standard revisionary work on this group is highly needed. Few phylogenetic studies on Dictyopharidae have been undertaken, and the monophyly of the family, as well as the taxonomy of subfamilies and tribes, is uncertain. Furthermore, the systematic position of some taxa is questionable. Since 2006, a series of papers of Dictyopharidae systematics from the Oriental and eastern Palaearctic Regions have been published by the applicant and his collaborators. Our researches create an opportunity to develop some analyses on the phylogeny and biogeography of the Oriental and eastern Palaearctic Dictyopharidae. The study results provide a reference frame with which to review and investigate the phylogenetic relationships and evolution of the World Dictyopharidae. In this project, comprehensive taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses of World Dictyopharidae will be performed on the basis of the classical taxonomy, cladistics, comparative morphology, geometric morphometrics, and historical biogeography in order to revise and reclassify the family. The origin and evolution of Dictyopharidae will be discussed based on the results of phylogenetic analyses.
