Habitat fragmentation has become a topical issue in ecology and conservation biology. Understanding how habitat fragmentation affecting wildlife’s space use will promote effective management and critical assessment of wildlife habitats. However, most fragmentation studies relied solely on landscape pattern analysis or species niche traits, without Integrating of landscape pattern and ecological processes, to make inference on ecological consequences of habitat fragmentation, and therefore could not answer the question of how fragmentation patterns affect wildlife significantly. With the rapid development of landscape ecology, source-sink landscape theory has become an effective approach integrating landscape pattern and ecological processes. Originated from ecological-balancing theory, source-sink landscape theory assigns ecological values to landscape structural elements and analyze the relation between patterns and processes. In this research, we will quantify the patterns of habitat fragmentation for giant pandas in Qinling Mts. based on source-sink landscape theory. We build a source-sink landscape dynamics model for giant pandas’ habitat and integrate with habitat utilization dynamics of giant pandas in the past 30-years. Through the model, we evaluate the threshold effects of habitat fragmentation on giant pandas, and therefore gain important mechanistic insights into the effects of habitat fragmentation on giant pandas, which would greatly improve the effectiveness of habitat management as well as corridor design for giant pandas.
