Based on abundant and diverse fossil scorpionflies collected from the upper Mesozoic of northeastern China, the proposed research will focus on the morphology, systematics and phylogeny analyses of Mecoptera, combining with the morphologic and molecular data of extant families and integrating the ancient and modern, to reveal mecopteran phylogenetic relationships and their evolutionary history..For some special mecopterans, we will carry out functional morphology analyses of special structures, such as the mouthparts, genitalia, wing venation and color bands or spots, etc. and conduct comparison studies with modern confamilial taxa. Furthermore, with the help of surface pollen evidence on some special mecopterans with siphonate proboscides (Aneuretopsychidae and Mesopsychidae) and the mimesis relationship with associated plants, we will explore the co-evolution relationship between mecopteran and plants. All these results will provide more fossil records and reliable evidences for elucidation and reconstruction the natural history of Mecoptera.
