The mole-shrew(Anourosorex squamipes )is a kind of small farmland harmful mammal in its distribution area. The increase of its population number seriously plagued the pest control in our country for a long time. The most obvious characteristic of Anourosorex squamipes is releasing the “stink”. However, the biological function of the odor is still poorly understood. At present chemical communication is the research hotspot of animal behavior, but similar researches in the insectivores are scarce. In the project, we will systematically study sex differences, seasonal dynamics, development characteristics, micro-structural change of the odor glands in the Anourosorex squamipes. The methods including field experiments, behavioral research, neuroendocrine, molecular biology, chemical analysis GC-MS. We aim to dissect the behavioral functions of the odor on conspecific recognition, sex recognition, social status, intra- and inter-specific interactions. In addition, the source, chemical constituents,c-fos gene expression on the odor will be investigated. We hope to understand the basic behavior functions of the odor of the Anourosorex squamipes and reveal mechanisms of neuromodulation of the odor pheromone. Finally, the influences of the Anourosorex squamipes odor signal on population variation will be analyzed. This research has an important application prospect about the new attractants development for the Anourosorex squamipes and other pest control, and it will be supplementary to the studies on the odor signals of insectivora. Furthermore, it would promote the studies on mammals chemical communication and population regulation.
