This project will research the population dynamics pattern of giant panda and the transitions of habitat vegetation and landscape in recent 40 years in Sichuan Province at multiple spatial and temporal scales, with the data of field monitoring, habitat assessment and model simulation, combined with the results of the four panda surveys. The project will focus on the mechanism of the giant pandas population’s response to the forest habitat change, in the contexts of human activity disturbance and natural succession in recent 40 years. The relative importance of human activity disturbance and natural succession will be compared. The relationship between the giant panda population dynamics and the habitats’ forest landscape evolution will be explored. The effects of habitats’ forest landscape evolution on the spatial dynamics of habitat suitability will be studied too. Conservation measures foe the endangered species and their habitat in forest .landscape of the Southwest China will be proposed based on those studies. This project will provide theoretical and technical supports for the in situ conservation of wild giant pandas. The results will also be significant to the construction of the captive pandas’ wild-training facilities and the selection of proper habitat for pandas to be released.
