There is a high ratio of direct and passive smoking in pregnant women, which may induce long-term pulmonary hypoplasia in the newborns. It is a serious problem to be solved urgently worldwide. New studies have revealed that the PPARγ and the signal paths of Wnt/β-catenin are the critical paths when the newborns are exposed to nicotine in the pregnant period. Electro-acupunctue therapy is the treasure of Chinese medicine, which is able to regulate nerve-endocrine and protect the lung. The applicant and American Prof. Rehan VK studied jointly in the early preliminary experiment, who have found that electro-acupuncture applied to ST 36 in rats exposed to nicotine in the pregnant and lactation periods could markedly promote PPAR-γ synthesis of the newborn rats' lung, inhibit activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, et al. Our research program tries to use the PPARγ and Wnt/β-catenin signal paths, etc. as an entry point to clarify the effect and its distribution of various acupoints, and to confirm that it can regulate nerve-endocrine of rats to protect lung development of offspring, as well as varied mechanisms by applying HE staining, western-blot, real-time PCR, immunofluorescent staining, and laser confocal microscopic imagining. It is expected that the study will provide theoretical foundation and new target spots for protection and treatment of pulmonay hypoplasia of the newborns intervened by electro-acupuncture.
