Hongjie Yu has conducted systematic, long-term studies on the epidemiology of infectious diseases. He has a series of important academic achievements with major contributions including: 1) elucidated basic epidemiologic characteristics of Hand, foot, and mouth disease, such as seasonal patterns, disease burden, clinical severity, and risk factors associated with severe and fatal outcomes, 2) discovered marked differences in seasonality of human infections with influenza A and B viruses, illustrated shedding dynamics of the newly emerged influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, and demonstrated that influenza B-associated excess mortality was higher than influenza A-associated excess mortality, 3) provided an accurate estimate of the incubation period of human infection with the new avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, demonstrated the existence of a “clinical iceberg” phenomenon in avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infections, and quantified clinical severity of the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection which indicated the virus is not as severe as the avian influenza A(H5N1) virus, while more severe than the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and seasonal influenza viruses. ..He has published 32 research articles in the international peer-reviewed journals of the Science Citation Index (SCI) during the recent five years as first (joint first) author or corresponding (joint corresponding) author, including the Lancet (3), BMJ (2), PLoS Medicine (1), Lancet Infectious Diseases (1), and Nature Communications (1) with 6 editorial comments on his articles published in the same issues. His publications were cited 1692 times by others publications in the SCI with one most cited by 462 times. Findings of his research projects and studies have important scientific significance for establishing the knowledge and understandings of the basic epidemiological characteristics of the infectious diseases mentioned above, and have supplied essential scientific data to evidenced-based technical recommendations and public health decision making for preventing and controlling infectious diseases by the World Health Organization and Chinese governments. He was elected as one of leading young scientists for research and innovation by Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology in 2014.
