The applicant has been working on the dynamics of cytoskeleton composed of major sperm protein (MSP) in nematodes sperm for a long period of time and making remarkable achievements in the last five years. (1) Revealed that spermiogenesis and sperm competition are mechanistically connected in nematodes (PNAS, 2012); (2) Reported that the micronutrient element zinc modulates sperm activation through the SPE-8 signaling pathway in Caenorhabditis elegans (Development, 2013; BBA, 2013); (3) Demonstrated that lipid microdomains composed of cholesterol and the glycosphingolipids are involved for signal transduction required for sperm activation in Caenorhabditis elegans (BBA, 2012); (4) Systematically investigated the transcriptome for the regulation of spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis in nematodes (BMC Genomics, 2011, 2014). Collaborating with worm researchers in China because of the applicant's expertise in electron microscopy study, he and his students as co-authors have published three impactful papers in high profile journals (Cell, 2009; Science, 2010; PLoS Genetics, 2013). Totally, the applicant has published 9 research articles as the corresponding author and 4 other research articles as one of co-authors since 2009.
