The applicant has been working for many years on host specificity, transmission dynamics and genetic mechanism for the emergence of virulent and dominant subtypes of Cryptosporidium. Some major achievements in these areas within the last five years include (1) characterization of host specificity and host adaptation in Cryptosporidium spp. and other zoonotic pathogens, which are now used widely as the scientific basis for the tracking of infection and contamination sources and assessment of the public health significance of these pathogens in animals and environment; (2) elucidation of the relationship between the dissemination of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and animal farming, discovery of the second cryptosporidiosis outbreak in humans in developing countries, and demonstration of the importance of zoonotic transmission in epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis in humans in developing countries; and (3) demonstration of the role of genetic recombination in the emergence of virulent and dominant subtypes of Cryptosporidium spp. in humans and animals in three recent publications, and localization of the virulence genes to a 129 kb region in chromosome 6 through comparative genomics and chromosome-wide sequence polymorphism scanning. These activities have led to the generation of 76 publications in international scientific journals, with an h index of 19. They include 40 publications within the last 5 years, in renowned international journals such as Emerging Infectious Diseases, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, Clinical Microbiology Reviews, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and International Journal for Parasitology with her as the first or corresponding author for 25 of them (including 5 papers in journals with IF > 6.0, and 13 papers in journals with IF = 3.0 - 5.9). Within the last five years, all of her publications were cited 941 times by peers. Her method for rapid diagnosis of Cryptosporidium species in ruminants, reviews on host specificity and host adaptation in Cryptosporidium and Giardia, and observations on the association between the world-wide dissemination of Cryptosporidium parvum and dairy cattle farming have been widely recognized and cited by peers. This has made two of her publications the Highly Cited Papers in Web of Knowledge, three of her publications No. 1 or 2 Most Cited Articles in their respective journals. She was a plenary speaker in eight international and national conferences including invited speaker for three of them and served as the session chair for five of them. Because of her excellence in research, the applicant received in 2005 the prestigious award “New Century Excellent Talents in Chinese Universities”.
