Adolescents are subject to mental health or problems or diseases, especially for that emotional/behavioral problems and risk behaviors are closely related to social-emotional development, and have high prevalence and detrimental impact. Many factors influence social-emotional development, of which sleep play a critical role. Much evidence support the close relationship between insufficient sleep or sleep disturbances and emotional/behavioral problems. Furthermore, mental health problems or diseases in adolescents and adults usually develop from early childhood. Our previous study explored the impact of sleep during pregnancy on obesity and metabolic diseases through a formal mother-infant cohort. Another focus of the study was the impact of sleep in early childhood on social-emotional development. Sleep, social-emotional development and associated factors were respectively measures at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months after the child birth. Based on our early work, we would collaborate with Hong Kong side to increase the cohort size, and conduct follow-up assessments on sleep, social-emotional developments and associated factors at preschool age, school age and adolescence so as to examine the impacts of sleep and social-emotional in early childhood on mental health and disease in adolescence. In the meanwhile, both sides hope to explore the path and mechanism for the impact of sleep on early social-emotional developments, and for the combined impact of these two factors on mental health and disease in adolescence, by using the cutting-edge techniques of experiments, and neuroimaging and molecular genetics.
