China and South Korea both have a wealth of natural resources and unique product-development experience. This project will integrate Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Sookmyung Women's University’s respective advantages to research and develop four pan-Asian medicinal plants in order to discover novel neuroprotective phytoestrogens. The Chinese team will be responsible for standardized extraction, chemical analysis, and large-scale preparation of active components; establishing quality control methods and standards; identification of main active metabolites, and DMPK studies. The ROK team will use in vivo and in vitro models of neuro- protection and estrogenic activity screens as well as biomarker-based bio-imaging for pharmacological analysis, MOA investigation, and safety pharmacology evaluation. The two sides will work together to complete the application and obtain the relevant patent license; to build a shared chemical library of phytoestrogens; and to provide basic technical support for the technology transfer, commercialization and expand cooperation with the relevant pharmaceutical companies.
