Silvetia siliquosa is a macroalga endemic in the Yellow-Bohai Sea with important ecological services and commercial values. Its distribution range covers the east coast of Shandong Peninsula, and Liaodong Peninsula, China, and the south and west coasts of Korean Peninsula. Since the 1990s, the geographical range and biomass of natural Silvetia siliquosa populations declined severely due mainly to anthropogenic impacts and habitat fragmentation, leading to a serious risk of extinction. In this joint research project, the China side will cooperate with the Korea side to investigate the current distribution range of Silvetia siliquosa in the Yellow-Bohai Sea and the south and west coasts of Korean Peninsula, determine the extent and level of vulnerability under anthropogenic climate change; compare the differences of multiple environmental variables within distribution range, and collect representative specimens of Silvetia siliquosa populations; establish specific genomic DNA germplasm bank for Silvetia siliquosa and clarify its population genetic diveristy and differentiation, and conduct preliminary transplant experiments outdoor for potential restoration of natural resources. The implementation of this joint project can not only help understood the geographical status and trend of biodiversity of Silvetia siliquosa, evaluate the possibility of transplant and restoration in field, but also provide significant baselines and foundations to subsequently explore how global climate change and human impacts influenced popuolation genetic diversity and biogeographical distribution patterns of Silvetia siliquosa.
