Biomineralization is part of the life process of living bamboo wall. It is a dynamic process of a multi-level complex system in which the chemical factors, matrix factors and state of cells that participate in the regulatory process are constantly changing.Three-level mutual control of chemical regulation, matrix regulation and cell regulation of living bamboo is synchronously achieved in this process. The project mainly studies how the changes at these regulatory levels lead to the formation of the hard epidermal tissue (silicification materials of bamboo) of bamboo wall, the growth of biological minerals and morphogenesis mechanism of bamboo, and aims at illustrating the relationship among the biological mineral composite structure-property-function of bamboo, and the symbiosis and interface features between the organic polysaccharide and inorganic silicon, and identifying the types of biological mineralization in bamboo. Finally, the relationship among the three levels will be revealed, biomineralization of living bamboo interpreted, and the theoretical basis for biological silicification of bamboo constructed. Understanding the bio-mineralization and formation mechanism of bamboo contributes to further revealing the natural property of bamboo, also to the development and utilization of new bamboo materials based on the biomineralization theory and bionic principles, to promoting utilization of the entire bamboo plant, to providing theoretical basis for adhesion between the outer and the inner of bamboo culm, and to playing an important role in the relevant high-tech fields, such as the intelligent design, bionic structure materials and so on.
