Wood density is one of the most important and useful wood quality indicators and is significantly affected by potentially confounding factors, such as thinning and climate. To date, these effects have not been comprehensively quantified in Larix olgensis. Dominant, co-dominant and intermediate trees were sampled from long-term fixed and temporary experimental stands along with the related climatic data. The aim of this study was to describe the variation in annual ring density in managed larch plantations as a function of cambial age, growth rate, climatic and thinning factors. The established relationships will be used for quantifying radial density patterns, including the density variation under climate change, will also help further our understanding of the links between ring density and thinning effects. Due to repeated observation and the hierarchical structure of the data, with observations on annual rings nested within trees, themselves clustered within sites, nonlinear mixed-effects modelling techniques will be applied for parameters estimation. Eventually, models will provide predictions to assist forest planner managing larch adapted to climate change in the future.
