Heihe River is the second largest inland basins of China and the key ecological security barrier of the northwest and even the whole country. The wetland ecosystems have been seriously disturbed and damaged and the ecological conditions continue to worsen mainly because the conflict between population growth and the decrease of land resources per capita is becoming more and more seriously. Therefore, the timely and accurate understanding of the succession rules and driving mechanisms of wetland vegetation has been the key problem for current wetland protection and restoration. This project studies the Heihe national natural wetland reserve in Zhangye, the middle reaches of Heihe River, through the field investigation of vegetation, soil and hydrological processes in the permanent sampling plots and supplementary plots in the Reserve, and the data collection from the forestry and water resource authorities. It is aimed to elucidate the spatial patterns and succession rules of wetland vegetation community and the physicochemical properties of soils in the Heihe Reserve; and to clarify the influences of hydrological variations on the growth dynamics of plant communities, dominant species and keystone species, biomass as well as the effects on the spatial variability of soils; and to fully understand the interaction mechanisms between vegetation and soil. The further purpose of this study is to offer the countermeasures and advice for wetland protection and restoration, which is of great importance to wetland protection and the sustainability of ecological conditions.
