For a long time, the Blumea balsamifera cultivation with low content of l-borneol and low yield has become an important factor on limiting its industrial development. The results in our pre-research have confirmed that exogenous magnesium could significantly enhance the content of l-borneol and medicinal material yield, but its regulation mechanism is not yet clear. Therefore, B. balsamifera is cultivated by hydroponics foliage sprayed magnesium with dynamic monitor. One the one hand, base on plant secondary metabolic pathway, the effect of exogenous magnesium on the content of l-borneol, and the activity of key enzyme (bornyl diphosphate synthase) and content of precursor geranyl diphosphate (GPP) in biosynthesis of l-borneol are studied. It can define the regulation of exogenous magnesium on the accumulation of l-borneol. On the other hand, base on plant primary metabolic pathway, the effect of exogenous magnesium on the endogenous hormone is analyzed. The effect of magnesium on contents of primary metabolites (total sugar, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber and ash) might also be verified and then explicit the influences on medicinal material yields of B. balsamifera. In addition, plant primary metabolites are the substantial bases for plant secondary metabolism. Through comprehensive analysis, the cooperative regulation mechanism of exogenous magnesium on the accumulation of l-borneol and medicinal material yield in B. balsamifera could be elucidated. In short, there is an important theoretical value to increase the quality and yield of B. balsamifera cultivation. At the same time, it will provide a favourable experimental basis to establish and improve the standardized production technology system of B. balsamifera cultivation.
