Birds breeding strategies are closely related to the environmental factors especially to food factors. With the aggravation of environmental pollution, the feeding composition and food safety of birds will inevitably be affected, which prompted the birds adjust their reproductive strategies. The present project will select rural residential areas from Liujiaxia (a relatively unpolluted area) and Baiyin ( a serious polluted area) as the study sites, whose straight-line distance of about 110 km. Tree sparrow (Passer montanus), a widely distributed species in China, is chosed as the research object. Using banding and imaging technology, we are going to observe and compare the propagation characteristics of tree sparrow populations in different age group of these two study areas (clutch size, hatching rate, nestling growth rate and bird feeding rate); By colorimetry, ultraviolet spectrophotometry, gas chromatography - mass spectrum, atomic emission spectrometer and sampling method etc., we will do the comparison of antioxidant capacity, immunity, diet composition, individual and food pollutants accumulation level and potential food availability between these two study areas. Through the above researches, we hope to make it clear how the tree sparrows adjust or change their breeding strategy in the similar natural environment but the food composition and quality under different conditions. The project aims to explore the effects and influence mechanism of food quality on the breeding characteristics and reproductive strategies of Passer montanus in the field conditions and to provide a reference for further research on bird diversity protection.
