Fig and fig wasps consist of a famous model for coevolution researches. The peculiar biological and behavioral characteristics of pollinating fig wasps (Insecta, Hymenoptera, Agaonidae) make them best suitable samples to investigate adaptive evolution. Coexisted cryptic pollinator species shed light on the sympatric speciation studies. Multidisciplinary progresses have been achieved in ecological, ethological and phylogenetic studies of pollinating fig wasps. However, taxonomy of pollinating fig wasps has been developed very slowly. This project aims at a systematic study of the Chinese pollinating fig wasps, identifying and describing Chinese species based on morphological characters, reconfirming the species identities, diagnosing closely related species, and discovering cryptic species via molecular approaches. Furthermore, we will utilize scanning electron microscopy to explore the adaptive characters and to trace their evolutionary trajectories.
