The project will focused on the body size of spiders, beetles, birds and mammals and its effect on the community assembly on artificial land-bridge islands with short history of isolation in the Thousand Island Lake, a typical fragmented habitat. We will investigate the shift and variation of body size, test the ‘island rule’ in animals on land-bridge islands, then examine the forces and factors influence evolution of body size of a given species and its underlying mechanisms of evolutionary adaption for multiple groups on land-bridge islands. By revealing these mechanisms, the project will build the model of faunal body size against the island variables, and then test the relationships between body size and species coexistence, thus in turn evaluate the effects of the spatial patterns of body size distribution (BSD) on community assembly, and community stability. By identifying the key factors influencing BSD pattern in a community, we will also test the relationship between BSD and island variables to build the model of the BSD patterns against island variables. Based on the above findings, we will discuss the mechanisms underlying species adaption, coexistence, and biodiversity sustainability on land-bridge islands. The project will contribute not only important scientific developments into the theories of species evolution, island biogeography and biodiversity sustainability, but also conservation strategies on biodiversity management.
