About twenty novel low-molecular-mass organic gelators (LMMGs), which are endowed with specific architectures, mutual interactions, and optoelectronic properties, are designed and synthesized. Their gelabilities and morphologies under various chemical and physical conditions such as solvent, concentration, and cooling rate are systematically investigated. With the deep insight into the requirements and rules of coexisting, equilibrium, and transformation of hierachical ordered aggregates and the relationship between chemical and/or stereo-structure of gelators with the morphologies and formation of the molecular aggregates, the control over the formation, structure and property mediation of the chiral ordered aggregates are achieved in some systems and helical structures with good stabilities, easy tailorabilities, and stimulus sensitivities are obtained, which can be employed as either electrochemically triggered near infrared chiroptical switches or templates of mesoporous polymeric materials and organic/inorganic hybrid composites. UV-induced free radical polymerizations are carried out in the gels formed by polymerizable LMMGs. Although no discernible effect on the stereostructure of the resultant polymer, the results obtained are of certain values for the future studies about the transformation from ordered supramolecular structures to nanobjects with controlled structures and well-defined shapes. Moreover, chiral teleinduction in radical polymerization of bulky styrenic monomers is studied..Five PhD candidates and one postdoctoral fellow are involved in this preject. The PI has given seven invited talks in international symposiums and six invited talks in national symposiums. Nineteen papers are published in peer review journals and five ones have been accepted for publication.
